Internal character representation for all text and filename elements in MSEgui is UCS2. On disk, tstatfile data is stored as UTF-8, the .mfm form files as ASCII, and source code as UTF-8 or the current locale encoding (user selectable) — the source editor itself holds text as UCS2. UCS2 was chosen over UTF-8 because it is simpler and faster for the kernel text drawing functions, which need character access by index for text layout; it also matches the Win32 API and Xft widechar interfaces directly. Convert an UTF-8 string to msestring with utf8tostring, and an ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1) string with latin1tostring.
